Working The Irish Festival Season

by jim on August 19th, 2007

It’s a rainy weekend.  My favorite music festival has been hampered extensively.  Irish Fest in Milwaukee is the largest Celtic music festival in the world.  It fantastic fun because the range and quality of artists is top notch.

A friend once told me that in this one weekend I could see two-thirds of all the acts that came to his uncle’s bar in Cleveland in a year.  Not bad.

From a business point of view the artists can come here and sell their music directly.  The established groups won’t be hurt as much as the new ones.  The arts are a difficult business, but so is every other business.  At least artists depend more on themselves than they do anyone else.  Doesn’t mean you can’t get screwed by a rainy weekend at an outdoor festival.

The other business people are those that sell all the stuff to the festival goers.  Ethnic vendors are the biggest niche players in the world.  Some was selling wall hangings made out of Irish peat.  There used to be vendor that sold custom made granite paving stones.  They’d put an Irish design on them or your crest or some Gaelic word.  Can you imagine carrying one of those back to the car?  I had no idea how they made money at that.  Maybe those are the people selling the peat now.  Well, if this was supposed to be a big money maker for them, then it wasn’t.

That’s the bad news.  The good news is that the Irish festival season has been going on since May and will continue on until October.  Most are much smaller than Milwaukee, but LA may be more lucrative.

I’m sure that there is an economic model that goes along with all the festival hopping.  It’s probably like the carnaval model.  Anyway they get to see lots of the country and enjoy nice weather most of the time.

People will do what they enjoy beyond anyway regardless of the business plan.  That may be the essence of a retirement business.  Enjoy yourself and don’t lose any money.
