Who Gets Results and Most Important - WHY?

by jim on November 19th, 2007

Fascinating article in WSJ today “Touch CEO’s Ofter Most Successful, a Study Finds”, by George Anders, pp B2.  Fascinating because it’s based on a closely held survey of corporate CEO’s run  for stock analysts.  It’s a real insight into who runs major corporations and what personal traits leads them to be successful.  The caveat in the last paragraph is great, also.

Bottom line, those that companies with ”hard asses” at the top do better than those who make their subordinates ”feel good.”  The caveat is that, as in all things, moderation is important.  If a business leader excludes either the tough side or the soft side the business looses, too.

Traits that matter are persistence, attention to detail, efficiency, analytical skills, and setting high standards.  Traits that matter “not so much” are strong oral communication, teamwork, flexibility/adaptability, enthusiasm and listening skills.

Personally, I’ve always found it easier to work with someone with the traits that matter.  I think that it was because they had clear concepts of what was important and they were easier to understand.  The softer skills are less easily measured.  One person’s communication style may not be so well appreciated by someone else. And, it’s always better to be associated with someone who is more successful.
