What My Father Said About Health

by jim on December 18th, 2007

“If you haven’t got your health, you haven’t got anything.”  That is what my father said about health.  From time to time he also mentioned that  “Be true to your teeth or they’ll be false to you.”  With the link between gum disease and heart disease, it turned out to be equally true and medically more relevant than I thought at the time.  Damn, the older I get the smarter he looks.

But, back to health and business.  Obviously, your health is a pivotal factor in your ability to successfully execute any kind of business plan.  The other side of that coin is the health of your family.  Anyone who has been a long term, or even moderate term, care giver knows the effort that you must expend in the process.  Sickness in your immediate family will take that resource out of your life and give you extra duties.  It will also give you extra responsibilities associated with the family member’s care, even if it is just showing up for the occasional visit.

Bottom line: Keep an eye on your own health and be involved in the good health of your family.  The impact of a sick spouse, parent or child can be devastating on a small business.
