What are Small Business Boomers?
Our name is our fame – We are
- Men and women born between 1946 and 1964 – so that makes us between 44 and 62 years old.
- The first of us are eligible for Social Security. Leading the pack is Kathleen Casey Kirshling, the so-called “first” Baby Boomer, born at 12:01 on January 1, 1946.
- Most of us are working. Many of us in second careers. Or third.
- Many of us have children; many of those children are out of the house (we hope!) and some out of college (hallelujah!)
- For some of us, we are the “old folks,” since our parents have passed away. For others of us, our parents are still around, in nursing homes, in our homes, in “assisted living” (whatever the heck that is), or out somewhere exploring.
- Many of us have businesses. Small businesses. We think about business, talk about business.
- We worry…
- That Social Security will run out before we do
- That we will be a “burden” on our children
- That the money will run out before we do
- About our children
- About our parents\
- We want to travel (at least I do). We read travel books. We look at cruise brochures and online cruise sites.
- We are enjoying life and looking forward.
- We remember a simpler time, when children didn’t wear bicycle helmets, and when you could walk downtown to get a cherry coke, made right at the soda fountain.
- We don’t care as much what we wear, as long as it’s comfortable.
- We would rather wear out than rust out.
- We all know where we were when we heard that JFK had been shot, and again when we heard that he had died.
- We heard our parents talking about WW II (“the big one”)
But we are not all alike. Those of us who are older have different memories than the “younger” ones.
We are the Baby Boom generation. And proud of it.
