6 gift ideas for the baby boomer in your life

by Jean on November 26th, 2007

From now until December 25, most of us spend way too much time thinking about (1) what we’d like to get for Christmas, and (2) what to get for those people we care about and/or need to get something for.

Speaking as a baby boomer, I can tell you what we would like:

1) Something for our hobby addiction.  Baby boomers have more disposable time and more disposable income than we ever did before.  And we enjoy spending time with hobbies.  Think multiple hobbies, for many of us.  Mine is quilting, which should serve as an example. While we probably already have the major gadgets, we’d love some of the little extra fun stuff, like a carrying case for the quilting supplies.  Of course, a gift certificate to our favorite hobby store would be appreciated too.

2.  A magazine subscription for our favorite hobby or for traveling.  There are many travel magazines out there.  Now that we’re nearing retirement, we can think about traveling and spending time “on the road.”  Travel and Leisure, among others, would be a great idea.

3.  Speaking of travel, anything that might be a travel aide, like a passport holder, or small travel bags, would be appreciated.  Particularly useful are items for travel abroad, where electrical outlets might be different.  Another great travel item would be a small travel pill container.

4.  Family photos, photo albums, photo frames.  I have often thought that there are three stages of having children.  First stage:  you have theories about children (thing you swear you will never do like your parents did).  Second stage:  you have children, and you’re too busy for theories or anything else, for that matter.  Third stage:  you have photos of your children.  We are in that third stage, and we love getting photos of our children and grandchildren.  Find something that goes with our home decor.

5.  Something for our collection.  I’m guessing that the baby boomer you know may be a collector.  If so, there’s always a new item to add to the collection, whether it’s stamps, antiques, or (like my husband) old woodworking tools.  A visit to an antique shop or E-bay might net you something cool.

6.  Videos or books.  Or better yet, a Netflix or Amazon gift certificate.  My husband and I have a growing collection of old videos on DVD.  We also enjoy Netflix, for those older movies and the foreign films you can’t get at the video store.

If this list was helpful, let us know.

Happy hunting!

    Great ideas!
I think an iPod is a great gift, too. You can listen to tunes or catch up on books via podcast. For the small business owner, you can even store your files on the iPod as a backup.

And, you can save time by downloading newspapers, articles, radio shows for business people from Audible.com (www.audible.com).

Toys! I always like to get one fun toy - and I’m not talking real Lear Jet, either. The funnest I saw recently was a $9 helicopter that you could fly around the house!

I have a suggestion - for people who like collectibles. We have designed a minted coin to honor the baby boom generation. We think its the perfect one of kind gift. Take a look at http://www.boomborn.com.
