The very important other health question

by jim on March 6th, 2007

Today I was going to do a number of different things, but a health issue came up.  It wasn’t a big deal, but it changed the day substantially.  My wife has had a head cold type thing for the past week and it just wore her down.  She’s an elementary reading teacher so she feels this duty to be in school for the kids.  Sick days are available, but there is some sort of code among teachers about not taking any.

Nevertheless, I got a call at work this morning to come pick her up because she was too sick to drive home from the walk-in clinic to which she had driven.  I cancelled a meeting and hustled off to retrieve my girl.  She was sick.  The cold had migrated into a sinus infection, a common occurence in Wisconsin’s late winter/early spring weather.  Once I had her home in bed then I could dash out and get the necessary prescriptions filled.  I won’t go into the details, but I cancelled out of another meeting and have been working from home ever since.

Today was a reminder.  My activity was a simple and seldom required function of a significant other.  It was nothing like having 2 small children who seemed to be constantly at the doctor’s office or when my girl battled and beat depression or a dying parent.  Today’s activities did bring home a point.  If you love someone your life is not your own.  A small trade for the relationship, but a real one.

If you have a spouse, significant other, child, parent, aunt, who ever that has a health problem you will probably spend time assisting them.  It is a good thing to do.  Not just for them, but more so for you.  It is better to give than receive.

This issue of the demands that another’s health will place on your time is a very significant when you think of work and starting a new business.  How are you going to account for your husband’s, wife’s, failing health?  Obviously, I couldn’t say unless you can explain the exact situation to me.    You will have to.
