The Start-Up - Working For The Virtual Man

by jim on July 5th, 2007

Today I hooked up with a friend of mine who runs a virtual company.  They used to be a real company, but for the past year they have become a virtual company.  They may be actually be more virtual than most.  Not only don’t they have any outside office, bu they don’t offer fringes and don’t require you to work any set hours.   All their relationships are sub-contractor to sub-contractor.

They sub-contract out their accounting.   Most of their billing is done by company credit card.  Even their accounts payable is handle by a clearing house.  Sales and customer services are handled on a project by project basis.  Most of the people who you might consider regular employees are over 60 and work on a part-time basis, because that is the way they want it.   They have other interests that they want to pursue.  Everyone is connected by e-mail and collaborative web based software.  Your earnings in sales and client service are based on how much time you want to devote at a given time.

In many ways the virtual model is not much different than the insurance industry model where agents and claims adjusters can be contractors to the main company.  Many large consulting and accounting firms subscribe to this model as well.

The thing that is sort of unique for my friend is that he has found a way to leverage older workers into the mix.  By working in this company I can leverage my time while I get my own start-up up to speed and keep the cash flow moving.
