The Market Bottom Is Coming

by jim on September 10th, 2007

The big economic question these days is when will the market hit bottom.  There is an avalanche of articles being published to address this question for every conceivable market.   Investors in every market, stock, bonds, housing, etc., are interested.

Everyone is looking for a turn-around in the near future.  Some are looking for an opportunity to buy.  Others are just looking for the bad news to end.  Prognosticators are prognosticating like mad.  If you want a particular opinion or economic forecast to fit you needs, I’m sure you can find the one you need.  Just by the laws of probability a few will be right and everyone else will be wrong to some degree.

Here is the deal.  Over my past 35 years of investing in everything you can possibly invest in I’ve found one thing to be true about market bottoms.  They only come when everyone has given up predicting when they will arrive.

So, go on living you life without concern for the market bottom.  Like market tops, only by luck might you pick it.  If a stock looks like a deal today, buy today.  Buy things you intend to keep for the long haul.  Dollar cost averaging is a good steady way to buy stocks.  Avoid funds that try and pick the tops and bottoms.  The pros aren’t any good at it.

Sounds dull.  It is, and a sure fire way to get wealthy slowly.
