The Internet: Savior or Devil?

by Jean on January 20th, 2008

The last few days I have been having Internet problems - s…l…o…w… to the extreme - losing packets, timing out. Pure frustration.

It made me think about Jim’s post about retirement and loneliness. We depend on the Internet so much for our connections to the world around us, that when it is slowed or stopped we don’t know what to do. I use email more than my cell phone these days to connect with my children; it’s far easier than playing phone tag, but occasionally I do like to hear their voices.

Baby boomers were the first TV generation, and certainly we are much more likely than our parents to use the Internet for communication. We tried to get my mother-in-law to use a mail station with limited success.

Our connections to the world in retirement will rely heavily on the Internet, both for communication and jobs.

Will we be able to continue to expect growth and prosperity with the www? or will it be replaced by something new?

One of the great things about the Internet is that with an online business, you can live anywhere you want in the world.

In fact, online marketer John Reese traveled around the world without having to worry about income… all because of the Internet. James Brausch just recently spent 3 months in Costa Rica, without any hiccups to his online business. There are plenty of other similar examples.

Yes, the Internet can be a cause of total time wasters and other negative impacts. But in the end it’s just a tool… we can choose whether we use it to our advantage and good… or whether we permit it to affect us negatively.

    Cheers,
    Jim

I agree, Jim. I find the Internet freeing. I can be anywhere and communicate. No one knows where I am. I can even pretend to be at work ;-)
