Small Business Boomers

A comment by Linda Johnson to one of my recent posts directed me to check out Bill Gates’ address to the graduates of Harvard in June 2007. In his address, he spoke about doing the most good for the most people.  The quote that particularly struck me was, “The barrier to change is not too little caring; it is too much complexity.”  In other words, turning caring into action should be a simple thing – you see a problem, and you act to change the problem.  But you may get blocked by complexities of the situation.  Gates says we …read more

I heard the song “Teach Your Children” by Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young yesterday and it struck me that we need to be telling our children about our past, and especially today about Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Civil Rights movement. Baby Boomers were  active participants in this time; you may have participated in a march or seen Dr. King speak, and if you were old enough, you might remember the horror you felt in hearing about his death.   So we have an obligation to “teach our children,” to tell our personal stories, and share our thoughts and …read more

In case you haven’t heard, the first baby boomer is now eligible for Social Security. Kathleen Casey Kirshner turned 62 at one minute after midnight on January 1, 2008.
So what does this mean for the economy? The Wall Street Journal isn’t sure – is it a bad thing for all the boomers to take their pension money out of the stock market, or is it bad for these very productive people to be leaving the workforce?
