Part-time Jobs for Retirees: Census Worker, Santa, and More

Want to play Santa this year?  Or Mrs. Claus?  Finding a part-time job as a Santa is a whole lot easier for retirees than for college kids.  Here are some part-time job ideas for baby boomers, for now and later….

  • Census Worker.  Have you ever wanted to know more about how they take the census?  You may have your opportunity if you can get a job as a census-taker.  Darlene McDaniel has the information about how to get hired as a census worker on InterviewChatter.  Of course, this one won’t start for a while, but it might work out for you if you are considering retiring in a few years.
  • Part-time Librarian.  If you love books, you might want to work part-time at your local library.  They always need people, particularly those who know their way around a library and who will work odd shifts.  Of course, this one doesn’t pay much, but it would be fun to see all the new books come in.

  • Seasonal worker.  Holiday jobs are not plentiful this year, but your work ethic and experience should give you an edge over younger applicants.  And your ability to stay on into January (after those college kids go back to school) might help too.
    • Telemarketer.  If you have a thick skin and you can sell, consider a telemarketing job.  And if you don’t want a job that involves a lot of standing or walking, this one’s a good choice.  Be sure you check out the company and its ethics before you accept.
