Small Business Boomers

Me and My Mom - Common Ground

by Darlene McDaniel on April 3rd, 2007

My mother is 61 years old is at the older end of the spectrum of Baby Boomers. I was born in 1963 and I am at the other end of the spectrum. At 61, my mother is still young to me. Back when I was a child 60 years old was considered old. Not so today!! Today my mother has successfully transitioned from her first career working for the government for well over 25 years. She is now an entrepreneur. She has her own successful business, Yoga with Betty.  My mother, who is spending her golden years, recreating herself as a business owner is very successful in her new business. She has been teaching yoga for well over 10 years. She completely turned the house into a yoga studio. Can you imagine going to grandma’s house and seeing no furniture in the den and strange oversize balls, wooden racks for stretching your body (ouch!).  Boomers in their golden years are doing amazing things today. Sixty years old is not old today. Older Boomers are working longer, changing jobs and recreating themselves. New skills, new responsibilities, going back to school and the list goes on.  I am a small business owner too. Not as successful as my mom yet, but I am working on it. My mom spent more than 25 years building her career in the government. I have changed jobs a number of times over the last 15 years. I built my career in Training and Development by changing jobs every two to two and half years for about 12 years and then guess what, 9-11 happened and I made a complete break from corporate America for five years.

Times have changed significantly since 1946-1964. Older Boomers and younger Boomers have more common ground than ever before. All of the boomers are over the age of 40 today in 2007. From my perspective there is lot to celebrate as a Boomer in 2007. As I write as a guest blogger for the month of April, I will share my thoughts, stories, information and my opinions about the future for Boomers. From my lens no matter where you fall in the spectrum between 1946-1964 our future is bright. I welcome your comments and suggestions!!
