Manufacturing in the US - Everything Old Is New Again

by jim on September 21st, 2007

The dollar is down.  Chinese products are having problems.  VW is loosing money selling cars in the US.  Toy manufacturers have only been manufacturing small pieces overseas.  Oil prices are up.  Chinese manufacturer of concrete pumps breaks ground for manufacturing plant in Georgia.

What we are seeing here is the perfect storm to expand the manufacturing base of the United States.  It is all about the money.  With the dollar cheap and transportation costs high it is now less costly for many items that will be sold in the US to be made in the US.  This will mean higher prices for domestic US consumers, but an opportunity for innovative manufacturers.

The big question is how far will this phenomenon go.  Don’t know, but you can exploit it by spreading the risk.  Other questions are what to make and who to sell it to.  All things you will have to decide for yourself.

One more point: This drift back to the US has apparently been going on for awhile.  Though many small toys are made overseas, larger ones continue to be made here due to the cost of transportation.
