Labor in the 21st Century

by jim on September 3rd, 2007

Knowledge is the currency of the 21st century.  To be continually valuable in the economy you have to commit to being a life long learner.

My son, who is 4 classes shy of his Masters in IT, just got home from a week long camp on Lake Superior.  At that camp they shared and trained on skills that were necessary before the advent of gun power.  Now, there was a Super WalMart not a half-hour from the campsite, but here are a hundred grown men and women out learn the skills they need to survive in the America of the 10 century.  It’s a nice hobby and in a generalized way adds to their intellectual capital, but napping flint is not an economically viable skill in the broader economy.

The question comes down to what have you done for me lately?  Have you made something?  Saved someone some money?  Delivered a product to a user?  Have you prepared yourself to contribute to the economic and hence social well-being of the world around you?  Are you kidding yourself?  Are you a drag on the world?

If you can’t get a job that might be related to you.  Take personal responsibility for you own situation.  Honesty about your own situation is the most difficult and valuable kind.  You need to pay the rent, actually and psychically.  You skill set may be obsolete or low valued.  If you need training, get back to school.

When you go back to school, you may want to think about which investment will give be the best pay-back for the effort.  You will have to make an investment, but you get define pay-back.
