Internet Tax

Should Internet service be taxed?  Those against say it will inhibit the use and innovation on the Internet.  I don’t think so.  If you are against taxes in general and that government should spend as little as possible then it’s OK to say no to an Internet tax.  However, don’t claim a price increase of 5 to 20% on Internet services will have any impact.

I say this as I pay my bill to my cable and Internet provider Time-Warner who has a virtual monopoly on those services in my area.  There prices have been going up at an amazing rate.  On the other hand I get a much broader range of products as well as much improved customer service.  They do jump for my $146 a month.

Two years ago I paid $96 a month.  Now, I get HD, recording, and business class Internet.  It’s very good, utility quality.  If I want less, I’ll buy less or switch to at&t when it comes to my area.

Do I want to pay more for my Internet?  No.  Will I? Yes, as long as there is a single provider in my market.  The tax will not make the difference the monopoly will.

Lots of info to think about here. We live in an area where we don’t have too many options either. I need to take time to learn more about the tax before giving a resounding Yes or No.
