In Criticism Of Writers Who Write about Writers

by jim on August 15th, 2007

I’m going to criticize writer’s in general for excessive navel gazing.  What brought this on is the new show Californication . It’s on Show Time this summer.  Whenever writers lose their imagination or get ”writer’s block”, that ficitious alement of the lazy, the decide to write about themselves.  Sometimes it turns out well as in the movie Adaptation, but that may be from the outstanding cast.  More often than not it just comes of whiney and self-indulgent.

As someone who has to come up with a reasonably intellegent idea to write about each day, I understand the problem.  When I wrote for a small town newspaper, the shortage of ideas was mind numbing.  I mean, what can you saw about a quilting bee that hasn’t been done to death and still have people speak to you at church.  Still, if you haven’t got a good idea don’t waste my time by writing about a bad one.  As a writer the last thing I want to hear about is how tough you have it as a writer.  As the imortal Emit Smith put it so well on that American Express commercial, “Pa-lease.”
