Impact of Time-to-Market
Maybe you have heard of the $100 laptop for developing countries. It was the brainchild of Prof. Nicholas Negroponte of MIT. His earth-satering idea is to provide laptops to kids in developing countries for $100 each. He started all this in’05. He started at the UN and got tremendous response. He was set to sell millions of these devices around the world. The hardware is designed by MIT using Advanced Micro Devices processors. The operating system is Linux. The office software is shareware.
Intel and MicroSoft saw the threat. There are billions more people out there without computers. than there are people using MicroSoft Windows/Vista and Intel processors. If Linux and Advanced Micro Devices get distributed in anywhere near that volume then they would become the defacto standard for the world. Intel and MicroSoft would loose that dominant position.
Well, the people at Intel and MicroSoft are not stupid. They cam up with some great strategies to compete with Dr. Negroponte. Damn, they are eating into his market and he is not happy about that. Doc get a grip.
The technology marketplace is all about time-to-market, (idea inception to customer hands). Ask Steve Jobs. Why do you think Apple comes out with a new i-device every quarter or so. And, it has more power and features than the previous one. And, it’s smaller. Oh and, it’s at the same price point as the old one. The competition is left in the dust.
The idea of putting laptops into the hands of billions of school kids around the world is still very valid. It will revolutionize life as we know it, because it will speed the flow of ideas. It’s really the same concept Ben Franklin used when he established the post office. But, in the world of high tech devices 2005 is yesterdays news.
