Hype
The best hype going is the college polls, football or basketball. If you follow them they don’t make much sense. There seems to be some sort of style points associated with the wins and losses. The University of Southern California lost last week and fell from 1 to 10. Louisiana State University lost this week and fell from 1 to 5. A loss is a loss is a loss.
However, determining the best football or basketball team in the country is not the objective of the polls. The objective is to have something for the sports columnists and commentators to talk about. Does that sound familiar?
It works the same with everything else. Screw up and people will talk about you. How about the guy who hyped his novel as a memoir on the Oprah show? He was proved to be a fraud, but the book sold well and he got a contract for a second book.
So, even if you don’t know a thing about football or basketball commenting on it can get you notices.
