Home Remodeling Project Finished
December 21, 2007 by jim
It’s hard to believe but our home re-modeling project is complete. We can actually empty our boxes and move back into our first floor. When the painter left yesterday the fact that workmen weren’t coming back didn’t register for about half an hour. There still is some furniture re-assembly to be done, but we could actually be back in our own bed tonight.
This was a fairly simple job, but it took 63 days. Workmen showed up as scheduled. There was a 5 day break around Thanksgiving and deer hunting season. People slide in and out of the project easily and pretty much on time. No big bumps and very few small ones.
What did I learn? Pretty much what I knew about projects. It will take longer than you think and cost more. The remodeling or fix-up shows on TVdon’t get close showing you the real time and effort required to do the project.
What does that mean to the small business person? When you take on a business improvement project you are taking on a second job. Your first job is running the on-going business. Don’t underestimate the effort and the disruption it will have on the on-going portion of your business.
