“Help Me Decide” Donation Contest - Last Day Tomorrow

by Jean on December 27th, 2008

Baby Boomers are generous folks.  I have been pleasantly surprised by the number of people who have taken time to comment on my “Help Me Decide” Where to Donate contest. I have received quite a nice list of excellent charities, including:

  • Cystic Fibrosis
  • Kidney Disease Foundation
  • American Heart Association
  • Breast Cancer Research (it was not specified, but I’d probably donate to the Susan G. Komen Foundation, unless the submitter has another specific organization)
  • United Cerebral Palsy
  • UNICEF
  • ASPCA
  • St. Jude Children’s Hospital
  • Salvation Army (several people)
  • LaLeche League
  • Habitat for Humanity of Greater New Orleans (they are working on rebuilding after the floods)

One organization that was suggested I had not heard of.  It is Seva Foundation (www.seva.org).  Their web page says: For thirty years now, Seva has served people around the world who are struggling for health, cultural survival and sustainable communities.

The person who made the suggestion talked in particular about their Sight Program, helping blind people see again through affordable eye care services in Africa and Asia.  Seva sounds like an excellent charity, and they do meet all 20 of the Better Business Bureau’s qualifications for charities.

Another of Seva’s initiatives is Community Self-Development.  They state:

It’s called self-development because local people define their own needs and build organizations for social change — while Seva provides training, tools, financial resources, and networking opportunities to support their vision.

I like that idea of helping people help themselves.

Another organization I would like to recommend is ACCION International.  Their tagline is “Helping Millions Help Themselves,” and they provide microloans to people in many countries, including the U.S., so they can start businesses.  What a great concept!

Thank you again for your ideas.  I will announce the charities in my Monday, December 29, post.
