Small Business Boomers

For Those Looking To Remain As Employees

by jim on May 17th, 2007

My daughter is looking for a job as she finishes up a Master’s program which has put me in a mindset of job hunting.  It’s my usual mindset because I’ve been in sales most of working life.  Everyone should realize that they are employed “at will.”  Read those words to mean at the will of management, the market place, your health, your family and the vagaries of bad weather.  We are all just consultants whose gig could end today.  Because I am always prepared to sell myself again I like to stay up on current trends in the job market.

My daughter has answered the first important question in her job search.  In what part of the country/world do you want to work?  No sense interviewing for a job in Sacramento, CA when you want to live inMilwaukee, WI.  You may think that’s an odd question for a boomer looking for a job, but you may be surprised at the answer.

Personal networking has always been and will always be the best way to land another job.  I won’t go into the details.  I’m sure you can think of them.

The big job posting sites on the Web used to be the place to go for those in search of work.  Not so much any more.  Their own success at drawing job seekers has reduced their attractiveness to employers.  There are too many responses to wade through in order to find qualified applicants.  Filters do not prove that helpful to employers and job seekers.  They simply aren’t flexible enough.

Niche job posting sites are a hot place to go.  Many professional organizations and employers have developed their own job posting systems.  These sites provide more targeted job offering and the job seekers who respond are better suited to offering organizations.  There are niche sites for those over 50.

A few points: If you are smart enough to find these niche sites maybe you are smart enough for the employers who post there.  Employers tend to review responses from these sites more closely which means that a human can pick out a gem that an automated filter will miss.

Cragslist has job postings.

Another great place to find a job is by working at a temp agency.  Think of a temp placement as a long interview.  They get to see you.  You get to see them.  You get paid.  There is a lot of win that approach for everyone.

One final thing for now, the easiest job to get is the job you already have.  You need to remind them everyday that you are there to do work for them, what ever it is.
