Flooding in Vinton, Iowa hits home (literally) for me
The flooding in Vinton, Iowa has really hit home (literally) for me. My husband and I lived there until two years ago, in a beautiful Victorian. The town has been hit with disastrous flooding this week, and the whole town is without power.
The white building on the bottom right is our favorite Chinese restaurant. No “Happy Family” being cooked tonight. That’s the beautiful county courthouse in the middle – kind of reminds me of the courthouse in Back to the Future. We are living in Cedar Rapids now, which is also being hit hard by flooding. Most of the downtown is under water; Governer Chet Culver called this a “500-year flood.” Wow!
If you want to donate to help the people affected by the tornados and storms and flooding in Iowa and elsewhere around the Midwest, I’d suggest donating to the American Red Cross disaster relief fund.

Jean, I hadn’t realized you were in the midst of the floodiing. I saw some pics of Cedar Rapids earlier today that a friend posted in a writing group. Horrible flooding and bridges closed or going.
We aren’t being affected too badly except that the power keeps going out, there is no mail delivery (the post office is under water!), and we are being asked to conserve water. I feel bad for people who are being evacuated and at risk of losing their homes.
On Tuesday June 10th, 18 young people arrived in Vinton, Iowa to start their training to be AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC) team leaders. This is the first class for this new NCCC campus at the Iowa School for the Braille and Sight Saving. Now these young people are helping manage a shelter for the local citizens. What a baptism under fire for these young people.
just wanted to let you know that your info is incorrect. that is not the chinese restuarant it is hacap. the chinese rest is not in the picture. it is a block to the left from what is shown in the middle of the block. this is one of the best pics i have seen.
The picture in the lower right is the Congregate Meals HACAP building. The very good chinese restaurant is just out of the photo on the left.

Jean glad to here your concern, I grew up in vinton and vistited a few weeks ago just after the flood. All is going well. I would like to comment on your directions though. the building on the right in the photo is not the chinese rest. but HACAP and congreget meals. the rest you speak of is to the left and not actually in that pic.
