Contest! Books for Baby Boomer Business Owners

What books would YOU recommend for a baby boomer starting a business? Give me your book selection and enter a contest to win a business book.

Barnes And Noble Profits Up Slightly In First Quarter

I have been asked to put together a list of books that I would recommend to people who are starting new business.  This is a fun job for me, since it requires me to go through my (extensive!) library of business books and pick out the best.  I’ll be sharing some of them with you over the next few weeks.

Here is where the CONTEST comes in- I’d like your recommendation  on business books.  And as incentive, I’m giving away a copy of each of my favorite TWO business books to one commenter:

1.  The E-Myth Revisited by Michael Gerber.

2.  The Warren Buffett Way, by Robert G. Hagstrom.

Yes, both!  The rules:

1.  Submit a comment to THIS post giving me a book recommendation for baby boomers starting a business.  Include your email address (no one but me will see it) so I can notify you if you win.

2.  The deadline is August 7 at midnight (Central Daylight Time).

3.  Only U.S. and Canadian entries will be considered (shipping costs).

4.  The winner will be selected by a randomized number selection process.  You may enter as many times as you want, as long as you include a different book with each entry.

Gosh, it’s hard to pick. Well, from MY experience starting a business, I would recommend The Well-Fed Writer and How to Start a Home-Based Writing Business. I would also recommend The 4-Hour Work Week.

“How to Win Friends and Influence People,” by Dale Carnegie. That is so critical to any business, although it’s not a business book, more a life book.

I recommend “Who’s Your City: How the Rise of the Creative Economy Is Making Where You Live the Most Important Decision in Your Life” by Richard Florida. He says you need to go to the action centers for the type of business you want to succeed in.

I’ll recommend Moose on the Table: A Novel Approach to Communications @ Work.

It’s a business fable about a boomer manager who is finally seeing how decades of “tiny concessions” have taken a toll on his career, family and health.

You can download it for free chapter by chapter at http://www.mooseonthetable.com or pay for the complete e-book, audio book or buy a “real” copy.

My first recommendation would be the new version of Jeffrey Gitomer’s Sales Bible. Many individuals that have technical knowledge forget that the pillar to success is the ability to build relationships to sell. This book provides the step-by-step guide to help all non-sales baby boomers.

My second recommendation woud be Seth Godin’s Meatball Sundae. We have more communication vehicles than ever. Make sure you are sending the right single brand message.

Thirdly, I’d recommend Make It Stick by Chip and Dan Heath. A great book that will help you define your message and have it stick in the minds of potential buyers. In my 50’s and growing up in the area of technology, this book helped me clarify my message for two new businesses.
