7 Ways to Keep Employees on the Payroll

In tough times, it’s sometimes necessary to let employees go (nice way of saying you’re laying them off).  However you say it, it’s not a pleasant task, for either of you. But sometimes there are ways to keep employees on the payroll.  Here are some suggestions:
1.  Reduce Hours.  This is the easiest one, for you.  […]

Baby Boomers Working From Home - What’s Your Schedule?

Rico at ContractWorker had an interesting post about some research on work-at-home types that got me to thinking about how our work habits differ and how different our lives can be when we get to work/rest/play according to our own body clocks, and not according to a restrictive job.
My husband just retired a couple of […]

Can/Should a small business owner get out of Jury Duty?

A friend of mine who runs a health care practice just got a letter telling him to report for jury duty. He is in a solo practice and any day he isn’t working is a day when he makes no money. He is married, with one child, and his wife doesn’t work (outside […]

Baby Boomer Retirement = A New Career

Baby boomers, please congratulate my husband - he is officially retiring today. Well, to be exact, he is leaving the full-time job he’s been in since 1980, leaving behind many friends and a lot of very productive work.
But he is not going to be sitting around the house - God forbid! He has […]

Boomer Business Owners: Can You “Fire” a Customer?

The situation I talked about yesterday, with the travel agent who got mad because the doctor didn’t use her agency to book a trip, has another twist to it.  The patient was 20 minutes late for her appointment.  And she was typically at least 15 minutes late for every appointment.  I told the doctor she […]

The case was based on the experiences […]

Nightmare employees: some scary stories from boomer business owners

Being in business is scary. And one of the scariest things about being in business is having to deal with scary employees…Nightmare employees. Not that they run around like Freddy or Jason (I can never keep those two straight), but they cause you nightmares.
For example (true stories):

The young woman who had her mother […]

Boomer Business Owners: What are your vacation plans?

Memorial Day signals the “official” start of the “vacation season.” So what are your vacation plans this year? Will you be taking a vacation? Where are you going? How long will you take? How will you keep your business going when you’re gone?
According to a recent American Express survey, […]

Turning 62? Get in Line at the Social Security Administration

My husband is turning 62 this fall. (Bill Clinton turns 62 in August, by the way.)
And it looks like the flood of Baby Boomers signing up for Social Security has begun, with 10,000 a day turning 62 this year. And the Social Security Administration is understaffed, so be prepared to stand […]

One Last Tip for Boomers

Monday I’ll start a gig as an auditing consultant.  I’m working through a temp agency who likes to place people with a high end skill set regardless of age, specifically Resource Global Professionals.  I’m sure that there are other similar types of outfits around.  I just happen to click with these folks.  When you can’t […]
