July: Mid-year “taking stock”

Image details: Yin-yang symbol served by picapp.com
Baby Boomers: July is a great time to take stock of your personal and business life. Although it is not the traditional time to do this, it’s perfect as a mid-year stock-taking and possible course correction.
Being a “words” person, I got hung up on looking for […]

Iowa Smoking Ban Effective Now: How does it effect small businesses?

Iowa’s smoking ban went into effect yesterday (July 1). The only two exceptions, as I understand it, are casinos (can’t stop those gamblers from smoking, can we?) and veterans hospitals (maybe on the assumption that they served their country and they have earned the right to kill themselves with smoking if they want).
You can […]

Boomer Men vs. Boomer Women as Shoppers

My post yesterday about Boomers vs. Gen X’ers as shoppers got me to wondering about the differences between men and women as shoppers. So I did some research and I have some comments on how this research might affect your business:

Women think about shopping as much as men think about sex. Women think […]

Customer Service Question: Do you talk with customers about your personal life?

My final question for Customer Service Week: Do you talk with customers about your personal life?
In some professions, you have little opportunity to talk to customers about yourself. You’re busy doing the work or sending off the product. But in many professions, you interact with customers, and there is plenty of time […]

Fun Friday: My Business Epiphany

This is an easy one for me.  My epiphany, my moment of realization, came from reading The E-Myth Revisited by Michael Gerber.

Customer Service Week: Do you refer customers to your competitors?

Here at Small Business Boomers we are in the middle of “Customer Service Week.” Each day I’ve asked a question about dealing with customers.
On Monday, it was about how to handle an irate customer.
On Tuesday, I asked if you would “fire” a customer.
Today’s question: Would you ever refer a potential customer to one […]

“Second Blooming”

Agatha Christie is quoted as saying, “”I have enjoyed greatly the second blooming… suddenly you find - at the age of 50, say - that a whole new life has opened before you.”
I know what she means. Do you?

A Great Graduation Speech by a Baby Boomer

I’m sure you’re thinking that’s an oxymoron: “Great” and “Graduation Speech.”
Every year people who are famous or rich (or sometimes both) get up and talk to college and high school graduation speakers. Humanity.org has cataloged excellent graduation speeches from 1936 to the present year. This year’s speech was given by Barbara Kingsolver titled […]

Fun Friday subject: are you a wimp?

“Running is a big question mark that’s there each and every day. It asks you, ‘Are you going to be a wimp or are you going to be strong today?’” - Peter Maher
We are all wimps about something. For some, it’s maybe spiders, or snakes. One of the girls in my office won’t […]
