Get an ID When Giving up Driver’s License

Get an ID When Giving up Driver’s License

A friend has to move her mother, with Alzheimer’s,  from Florida to their home in Vermont.
However, there has been a delay because Mother doesn’t have a Motor Vehicle issued ID or a passport.
It’s impractical to drive Mother those many miles, so they planned to fly.  Because Mother doesn’t have the proper ID (never thought of getting one when she didn’t renew her driver’s license), she can’t fly on the airlines in this day and age.
(I recall several years ago having to get my mother-in-law an official ID so we could take her and Dad on a flight across the country …read more

Baby Boomers – Are You Eating Out Less and Enjoying It More?

Baby Boomers – Are You Eating Out Less and Enjoying It More?

My husband and I have a favorite restaurant.  We go there at least once a week, usually more.  We just realized last weekend that we haven’t been there in two weeks.  The reason – we decided to eat out less.  And it appears that many other Baby Boomers are doing the same thing.

When we were children, my husband and I remember, eating out was a rare treat.  When we traveled in the summer with my father (a service representative who traveled every week), we thought it was cool to go to Howard Johnson’s for every meal.  …read more

Baby Boomer Women – Stay Active to “Stay Smart” and Multitask

Baby Boomer Women – Stay Active to “Stay Smart” and Multitask

My best friend just got back from China.  She walked the Great Wall, up many steps, and she was able to keep up when other younger people weren’t.  She has a regular vigorous walking routine, she lifts weights, swims with a Master’s group, and does yoga.  She is in great shape! And new information shows that being in shape physically can help keep you mentally fit too.
A recent study funded by the National Institutes of Health (and published in September in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society) shows that older women who are active do better on cognitive (knowledge) …read more

Baby Boomers: Book a Cruise on World’s Largest Cruise Night – Help the Economy

Tomorrow (October 16) is advertised as “World’s Largest Cruise Night” – a night when you can get great deals on cruises.  The Cruise Industry has designated October as National Cruise Vacation Month.
They don’t have to tempt me – I’m already tempted.  In order of priority, here is where I want to go on cruises:
#1 – Alaska.  What a gorgeous place!  I also want to take the train to Denali Park, either before or after the cruise.
#2 – Down the Seine from LeHavre to Paris, stopping to see the D-Day battlefields, Giverney (home of Monet) and another …read more

I’m on the Road to Retirement !

I’m on the Road to Retirement !

I turned in my resignation at my “day” job yesterday and I’m counting down the days.  I’m going to stay on part-time for a few months, but I will have much more time at home to do the things I want to do.
Why am I retiring now, when I’m only 60?  Three reasons:
1.  I want to spend more time with my grandchildren and the rest of my family,
2.  I want to travel, before I have to do it with a walker, and
3.  I have many, many books to write and other income ideas to work on.
Here’s my short list of …read more

Businesses for Boomers: 7 Writing Businesses You Can Start

Businesses for Boomers: 7 Writing Businesses You Can Start

I have been writing for a long time, non-fiction, business articles and books.  I did some children’s stories, back when my children were young, but I’ve never been really motivated to write fiction…until now.  Maybe you have to be more mature, more “lived in” to write fiction.
One of the entrants in the “50 things you can do at 50″ Contest got me thinking more about writing.  She said, If you’ve ever had the writing bug (like me), enter a short fiction, short non-fiction, or poetry contest. There are many out there and most entrants are younger, so our perspective is …read more

“50 things to do at 50″ Contest – More Great Responses!

Here are some more great responses for the “50 things to do at 50″ contest.

Play Nintendo DS to keep your mind  sharp
Buy a Wii and get fit in the comfort of your home. I do not do gyms, so this would be a great alternative. You can do what you want, when you want and the choices of activities are only limited by your pocketbook.
Get involved in an online community to save your tv program. I am currently involved in Save Moonlight and have found friends and kindred spirits throughout the world. Laughed with them, cried with them, offered support …read more

“50 things to do at 50″ Contest – Great Responses!

I have a winner in the replay of the “50 things to do at 50″ contest (more about the winner after he/she is notified). The responses were FANTASTIC and I want to share them with you, in no particular order:

Think about what you enjoy and then act on it! Start a hobby or business you never had time for and just enjoy.
Get a new hairstyle – do you still have the same style as in your high school photo?!?
Take time to really listen to your grandchildren
Find a hobby you love and make money on it
Sign up with a modeling …read more

“Not Just the Kitchen” – a New Website for Baby Boomer Women

“Not Just the Kitchen” – a New Website for Baby Boomer Women

Natasha commented recently on my post on a website for baby boomer women. She had a better website, called “Not Just the Kitchen,” which is free. So of course I had to check it out.
They have 3 areas: Family/Relationships, Health and Beauty, and Money and Finance. This website is part of a women’s network which includes another blog called “Divine Caroline” (subtitled “Life In Your Words”). Apparently, it’s a communication medium for women.
Check out Not Just the Kitchen and let me know what you think. Should I add it to …read more

Businesses for Boomers: Travel Writing

Donna Hull has my dream job. She gets to travel all over the U.S. and the world and she gets paid for it by writing articles about her travels. How cool!
Donna is a freelance travel writer who specializes in writing for Baby Boomers
Her blog, MyItchyTravelFeet (I love the title) details her recent trips, with interesting descriptions and great photos. She and her husband Alan don’t take the “roughing it” route- they go first class all the way.
