New Years Resolution – Busting the Time Wasters

New Years Resolution – Busting the Time Wasters

My all-time favorite quote, and one I think about every day:
“The life that conquers is the life that moves with a steady resolution and persistence toward a predetermined goal. Those who succeed are those who have thoroughly learned the immense importance of plan in life, and the tragic brevity of time.” — W.J. Davison
When I turned 60, my life changed. I began to think more and more about how much time I have left and how much I want to accomplish. I realized that my time was limited. We never know how much we have, or …read more

7 Reasons I’m Thankful for Small Business Boomers

7 Reasons I’m Thankful for Small Business Boomers

In honor of Thanksgiving in the U.S. today, I got to thinking about things for which I’m thankful.  In my list, I decided to include being thankful I’m a Baby Boomer and for my really great job here at Bizzia with Small Business Boomers.  Here is why:
1.  I like being part of history – Baby Boomers are the largest single demographic group in history.  I think that’s pretty cool.
2.  I enjoy interacting with other Baby Boomers who have similar interests and ideas.  It’s fun to get emails from people who “get” what I’m trying to do.
3.  I figure we all …read more

Forget Mattresses – Baby Boomers are Putting Money in Safes

Forget Mattresses – Baby Boomers are Putting Money in Safes

My parents never put their money under a mattress, but I do know some people of that generation who did.  They lived through the Great Depression and lost money in bank failures.  So they were not about to trust a bank.
Today we don’t have the same concern about banks -the FDIC says it will protect money in bank accounts, but many people are still nervous.  And nervous people do strange things.

Baby Boomers – Are You Eating Out Less and Enjoying It More?

Baby Boomers – Are You Eating Out Less and Enjoying It More?

My husband and I have a favorite restaurant.  We go there at least once a week, usually more.  We just realized last weekend that we haven’t been there in two weeks.  The reason – we decided to eat out less.  And it appears that many other Baby Boomers are doing the same thing.

When we were children, my husband and I remember, eating out was a rare treat.  When we traveled in the summer with my father (a service representative who traveled every week), we thought it was cool to go to Howard Johnson’s for every meal.  …read more

From Martin Luther King Jr to Barak Obama – From 1968 to 2008 – Baby Boomers Remember

From Martin Luther King Jr to Barak Obama – From 1968 to 2008 – Baby Boomers Remember

It has been a long time.  To be exact, 40 years.  Baby Boomers remember Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Civil Rights movement.  Dr. King was assassinated 40 years ago in Memphis.  But the movement continued.
Today, we have come full circle, with the election of Barak Obama as President of the United States.  Whatever your thoughts about the election, are you as moved as I am at this historic moment?  I wonder what Dr. King would be thinking if he were around today?
From 1968 to  2008.  What are your thoughts on this day?

Why We Are Not in a Recession

Why We Are Not in a Recession

We are not in a recession.  For proof, I offer Exhibit A:

I was in a “big box” national pet store on Friday (Halloween) to get my cat groomed.  I couldn’t believe how many people were there buying Halloween costumes for their pets.  If people still have enough discretionary income to buy this stuff, we aren’t in a recession.
For a recession-proof small business, run a pet store.
