Can/Should a small business owner get out of Jury Duty?

A friend of mine who runs a health care practice just got a letter telling him to report for jury duty. He is in a solo practice and any day he isn’t working is a day when he makes no money. He is married, with one child, and his wife doesn’t work (outside […]

Boomers: How to package your small business loan request

In my last post today, I talked about a new course from the SBA describing the types of loans they have available.  Here is the second new course from the SBA.
The second one, How to Package a Loan Request,  discusses the requirements for putting together a loan.
It also includes a list of “realities” about small […]

Customer Service Question: Do you talk with customers about your personal life?

My final question for Customer Service Week: Do you talk with customers about your personal life?
In some professions, you have little opportunity to talk to customers about yourself. You’re busy doing the work or sending off the product. But in many professions, you interact with customers, and there is plenty of time […]

Customer Service Week: Do you refer customers to your competitors?

Here at Small Business Boomers we are in the middle of “Customer Service Week.” Each day I’ve asked a question about dealing with customers.
On Monday, it was about how to handle an irate customer.

Baby boomer employees, including a company “superstar,” were terminated from Avaya, Inc. in favor of younger employees. In a resultant age discrimination case against Avaya, the jury awarded $10 million in punitive damages. The award is believed to be a record for punitive damages in New Jersey.

The young woman who had her mother […]

Baby boomers in chocolate … businesses, that is

I confess; I’m a confirmed choc-o-holic. I blame my mother; the only way she could get me to drink milk was to put chocolate syrup in it. Remember?
I am convinced that chocolate is the perfect food. I am certain that it is also a healthy food. We have all heard […]

Extending credit during hard economic times a “Catch 22″?

As a small business owner, you sometimes have difficult decisions to make. (No kidding, Jean! ) One of these decisions is a real Catch-22: In tough economic times, when your customers are not paying as fast, should you risk losing business by tightening your credit terms, or should you allow customers […]

Barak Obama’s Business Plan

I have another “gig” for About.com as a Guide for U.S. Small Business Law and Taxes.  I recently wrote about the candidates’ business plans.  (You can see what I wrote about Hillary Clinton’s opinions on business taxes, if you’re interested.)
Here is the information on Barak Obama and business taxes.

Helping Employees Fight Gas Prices - 4 day workweek?

What are you baby boomer business owners doing to help employees fight high gas prices?
Some companies are going to a 4-day workweek.
Others are offering telecommuting
And some are providing commuter vans to carry groups of employees to work.
Why help employees? Because:

Helping employees engenders more loyalty (theoretically)
If you don’t, they may have to quit or find another […]
