Keeping Your Small Business Going After Surgery

Keeping Your Small Business Going After Surgery

Dr. Jean Murray, former blogger here at Small Business Boomers, and now owner of Dr. Jean Means Business , writes a guest post for us today about keeping her business going during knee replacement surgery and recovery.
Like many other Baby Boomers, I have terrible knees. The word “bone on bone” was first told me by my internist a year or so ago, and it didn’t take long for me to decide I needed to get new knees.
At 62, I’m on the younger age of the knee replacement demographic (nice to be told, “You’re a little young for this,”).  But I figured,  “Why live …read more

Boomers’ Health Benefits from Working

Boomers’ Health Benefits from Working

According to articles I’ve come across recently, seniors are more inclined to be in better health if they continue working after retirement age.
Also, if they’re working at complex jobs, their minds stay sharper.
Many boomers have reached retirement age or soon will be there.  This information about working and health may be a reason seniors/boomers consider their own businesses, whether starting one that will grow to the hiring of employees or be the expansion of a hobby into a home business.
Most seniors today, unless they already have existing health problems, don’t want to spend all their days in a rocking …read more

Will Boomers Become Extinct Under Obamacare?

Will Boomers Become Extinct Under Obamacare?

If the proposed Obamacare (Obama’s health care law) is passed, Boomers could be on their way to extinction.  According to Obama’s own words, pain pills should be dispensed rather than medical procedures that will prolong and improve the life of the elderly.
Boomers are gravitating into that category called “elderly” as they pass age 65.  The plan includes counseling on end of life procedures for Boomers rather than on medical ones to continue life if someone in an administrative position deems you unworthy to receive care. In other words, if your prolonged life is not cost effective…your productivity, when compared to …read more

Fines for Lack of Health Insurance

Fines for Lack of Health Insurance

One of the proposals for the Obamacare health plans consists of fining people/businesses, up to $3800, if they don’t carry health insurance.  Under these rules, it won’t be an option whether you want health insurance or not (and some boomers are in the pre-Medicare age where they have a choice).
How will this affect you and your small business?  Also, there has been discussion that you won’t be allowed to choose a high deductible, something my husband and I once opted for, to keep health insurance premiums down.  We decided we could pay for the smaller health costs and carry health …read more

Obamacare Resources for Boomers

Obamacare Resources for Boomers

Since I wrote the post, Boomers’ Concerns About Obamacare, I have heard from readers and researched some more resources myself that will give you more insight on what’s being proposed and how it will control our lives, give us less care and cost more.
Here are some resources:
What Health Care Reform Will Cost You  (Read the entire article as it details costs, penalties, and loss of care)
Obama’s Euthanasia Mistake (Interesting analysis by someone who in general would support government controlled health care)
Obamacare Proposes Government Control of Child Rearing with Home Visits (Will your values and principles be ignored in favor of what a …read more

Boomers’ Concerns About Obamacare

Boomers’ Concerns About Obamacare

In response to Jean Murray’s , Will Obama’s Health Plan Destroy Medicare?”, one of our readers gave this input:
I do not understand what Obama is doing concerning Medicare. We are on a fixed income and Medicare is to our advantage for health care. Monies are taken out every month from our social security to pay for our Medicare part A and part B. I trust we will not be affected. Nothing is clear to the public. Just keep Medicare for those who have it and have been paying into it!!!
Jean had discussed “savings” actually meaning cuts in health care for …read more

How Will Obama’s Health Care Proposals Affect Boomers?

How Will Obama’s Health Care Proposals Affect Boomers?

Nothing has been formalized nor signed into legislation yet about President Obama’s proposed health care program, which he and some members of Congress are trying to push through in the next couple of weeks without anyone reading the entire 1,000+ pages.  Even Obama admits, in interviews, that he doesn’t know all that it contains.
However, much discussion has evolved regarding it’s effect on Boomers, or those 65 years of age and older.  Some research indicates that people in that age category will be denied health care procedures and medication because they’ll be considered not productive enough to be worth the money …read more

Exercise Your Brain for Improved Mental Fitness

Exercise Your Brain for Improved Mental Fitness

I don’t know about you, but I seem to get more forgetful as I get older. My sister (a year younger than I) said she feels the same way. As I talk to other Baby Boomers nearing 60, it seems many of us are concerned as much about staying fit mentally as we are with physical fitness.
Did you know you could train your brain to increase your memory and be more productive? In his book: Train Your Brain: 60 Days to a Better Brain , Ryuta Kawashima provides exercises to help your brain be more healthy. Just …read more
