By way of introduction
“It’s like playing in the NBA finals everyday.” That’s what one of my friends said about being in business for himself. He is absolutely right. The great thing about that statement is everyone can play, because the talent you use is in your heart and in your head.
There is good news and bad news. The good news is you get all the glory and adrenalin rush of making the winning lay-ups. The bad news, you get to do all the work. To take the sport analogy a step further, after you pour your Gatorade over your head, you get to stay in the arena after everyone has gone home to wash your own jock strap or sports bra as the case may be.
What this really means is that as entrepreneurs you have more things to do than time to do them. If you have time to sit and read this blog for entertainment you have missed something serious. Your time is incredibly valuable to you. What should you be doing?
My task in this space is to provide you with a resource to improve your business life, and maybe your real life. In some way what appears here should help you make more money for your business. How you make money with what happens here is your job.
My name is Jim Norton. I am a capitalist. I strongly believe that people value what they pay for. Put another way, if someone doesn’t reach in their pocket and give you money for your goods or services then they probably don’t think it’s worth anything. Taking that one step further, the amount of money people pay for something is directly proportional to the value they place on it. This leads to the following rule and promise.
First blog rule –If you can’t do something more valuable for your business than reading this blog then you’re allowed to read on. If not, turn this off and get busy.
First promise. I will not knowing post anything that will waste you time.
I will not post things just to generate controversy or churn the site. Things posted here may be controversial, but they will be business related. An example of such a topic is the illegal immigrant situation in this country. If you want to hear yourself talk, go someplace else. If you want to seriously talk business, stick around.
If you are interested in a little biographical information read on, if not skip to the next paragraph. I’m that age when the only people interested in reading my resume are me and the person who writes obituaries. I’m very lucky to be married to the same woman for 37 years. We have two grown kids who are much smarter at their age then I was back then. I’ve been a solider in Vietnam. I have undergraduate degrees in Philosophy, Electrical Engineering and a Master in Business Administration. Though I’ve lived in the same zip code, or close by, for most of my life, I’ve traveled often and extensively. Mostly I’ve been in business, my own (6, real estate through pharmaceuticals) and others (mostly hi-tech and in sales).
I love being in business. That means we will be talking about business in this space, principally entrepreneurial enterprises. Topics will deal mostly with the ins and outs of commerce, because “The business of America is business”. We will cover a complete range of topics related to business. I’ll share what I’ve learned and try to relate those experiences to today’s business environment. I’ll interview guests who will do the same. I’ll refer you to other resources. Hopefully, you will pitch in too. We will disagree and agree. In the best of all situations this process will help someone be more successful in their own business life.
In no particular order here are some of the topics that come to my mind.
- reputation
- change
- people
- finances
- health care
- working with small groups
- limited resources of all kinds
- free and low cost resources
- what smart, big companies do in that situation
- varied educational backgrounds of team members
- survival is the primary objective
- illegal immigration
- ages of entrepreneurs
- personal resources as seed money
- not a get rich quick situation
- family relationships
- variety of business ideas
- partnerships and sole proprietorships
- conflicts – big and small
- pragmatism
- things that make me angry
- patience
- things that make you angry
- good news
- celebrating success
If you have an important issue you would like to discuss please let me know so we can give it the emphasis it deserves. I expect to cover certain topics by interviewing people who are and have been in business for themselves. Hopefully, their experiences will help you.
I’ll start and we’ll see where it takes us. Jump in anytime.
