Business Success Doesn’t Come From Short-Term Thinking

In 1943, Tom Watson, legendary founder of IBM, was quoted as saying, “I think there is a world market for about five computers.”

Bill Gates also quoted as saying “640K ought to be enough for anybody.”

And in 1899 the Commissioner of the U.S. Patent Office suggested that the patent office be closed, because, he said, “”Everything that can be invented – has already been invented”

So are you limiting your thinking by deciding that:

(1)You are too old to start a business?

(2) You are trapped in a job you hate but you figure you can’t retire?

(3) The market is down so this is a terrible time to start a business?

The psychologist Abraham Maslow said, “The story of the human race is the story of men and women selling themselves short.” Don’t do it.

One of my favorite quotes by Goethe: Whatever you can do, or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it.

How do you overcome your fears and get started?

1. Read motivational books. Listen to motivational tapes, from people like Tony Robbins, Brian Tracy, Zig Ziglar.

2. Read business books, take courses, learn the rules of business, particularly marketing.

3. Talk with successful business people. Find out their secrets.

4. Most of all, get going. Decide what you are going to to then start taking steps to do it.

    Jean,

Another book I’d recommend is Jonathan Fields’ new bestseller Career Renegades. He has some great advice, especially for folks who have a passion they’d like to follow, but have no idea how (or if) they could make a business out of it.
