Boomer Christmas Holiday songs - we need a new one

by Jean on December 20th, 2007

I have been listening to holiday songs, mostly on Pandora and I have decided that we need a new one. I like Pandora, which is a free web song player; you can create your own stations and select music to suit your taste. I have several holiday stations, including a Motown holiday station and a Rock holiday station. But after listening to these stations for a week or two, I am getting tired of hearing the same songs. Is there a new song that you like?

christmas albumsMy inquisitive side wondered what songs were created during the Baby Boom period, starting in 1946. Here is what I have so far…

  • Let it Snow, created in 1945, recorded in 1946. Vaughn Monroe was the artist.
  • Sleigh Ride, first recorded in 1949 (It was written during a heat wave in summer)
  • The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting …) written in 1944 by Mel Torme. This really is a pre-boomer song, but I get to pick.
  • Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, written for the 1944 movie Meet Me in St. Louis, with Judy Garland. Another pre-boomer song that I wanted to include
  • Frosty the Snowman, recorded by Gene Autry in 1950.
  • Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, another Gene Autry pop song from 1949.
  • Little Drummer Boy, recorded in 1957 by the Harry Simeone Chorale
  • I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day, recorded in the 1950s
  • Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree, 1958 by Brenda Lee
  • Jingle Bell Rock, first released by Bobby Helms in 1957
  • Blue Christmas, Elvis, 1957
  • (It’s the) Most Wonderful Time of the Year, recorded by Andy Williams in 1963
  • And, of course, The Chipmunk Song, released by Ross Bagdasarian in 1958 (click on the title to listen)

Ok, now it’s your turn. What songs have I forgotten? Send me your ideas. No traditional carols, like Silent Night. Nothing written/recorded before 1946 or after 1964. I will do another post with the additional songs.
