Blog Credibility
Here is an interesting business story. http://franchisetimes.com/content/story.php?article=00490 And, a cautionary tale for business people. Who got hurt and why?
If you went to this story and read it, what did you think of the original blogger and those who posted negative comments about Cuppy’s? Did they check their facts or shoot off their metaphorical mouths? Did they have an ax to grind?
What do you think of the people who read these negative comments? Did they check their facts or just assume that the bloggers did? Did they appear to be people you would want to do business with?
Do the blogging sites have any responsibility to take down false, liabelous or defamatory remarks or do they just get to wave a ‘free speech’ flag?
Every time a blogger posts something for his or her own gain the creditability of all bloggers is hurt. Every time a blogger posts something without checking all the facts the blogosphere takes a hit.
If you read something posted by a blogger you need to keep in mind the words my father passed on to me fifty years ago. “Believe half of what you read and none of what you hear.” Blogging appears to fall somewhere in the middle of that spectrum. Where did the bloggers in this story fall?
For a blogger their ethical reputation is everything. Unfortunately, we will all be painted with the brush used by the incompetent and unethical. So, who has the responsibility to police the bloggers?
