Ball Jointed Dolls for Baby Boomers
This week the Third Annual Ball Jointed Doll Convention is being held in Austin, Texas. There is a place in this world for any hobby or interest, and the Ball Joint Doll phenomenon (BJD) is proof. Dolls have been around for centuries, of course, but moden technology has now given us, from Japan, Korea, and China, resin-based and anime-inspired dolls in various sizes. These dolls are anatomically correct*, poseable, and customizable - you can change hair, eyes, hands, etc. The typical doll might cost between $500 and $1000, but collectible dolls might be as much as $5000. (Of course, we Baby Boomers have money to spend on collecting, don’t we?) You can buy a “Goth” doll, a pixie doll, even a vampire doll. And there are dolls depicting native dress in many countries, and dolls dressed as famous characters.
An entire sub-culture has sprung up to provide accessories and clothing for these dolls, at prices comparable to human clothing. Manufacturers and resellers abound.
If you are looking for a doll for your grand-daughter to play with, this probably isn’t the one. While the dolls are poseable and can stand upright on their own (bigger feet than Barie) the cost of the outfits and the fragility of some of the dolls makes me think I wouldn’t want my grand-kids playing with them.
(*Yes, they have anatomically correct boy dolls too)
