Baby Boomer Volunteer Idea of the Week: ExperienceCorps
This regular column is something I have wanted to do for some months, and I decided the best time to start is now. So, every week, I’ll present a specific volunteer opportunity for Baby Boomers. If you are nearing retirement, or you are still working, I’m hoping you will consider joining one of these organizations and volunteering time.
Why? Well, as Vince Lombardi said:
Individual commitment to a group effort — that is what makes a team work, a company work, a society work, a civilization work.
I just learned of an organization called Experience Corps, which has as its mission using the experience of Baby Boomers and older adults to benefit schools and children. ExperienceCorps members aged 55+ in 23 U.S. cities “work in public schools and community centers tutoring and mentoring, providing homework help, and giving attention to those children most in need.”
ExperienceCorps is on the ideas of educator John Gardner (former U.S. Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare), who wanted to use the time, talent, and experience of older Americans to revitalize their communities.
You might want to read some of the inspirational stories from members and from students.
If you are interested in starting an ExperienceCorps group in your city, you must meet some strict standards set by the national organization, including:
- Focus on outcomes
- High member commitment
- Rigorous member training
- Team-based approach
- Critical mass of members
- Leadership development
Of course, ExperienceCorps is also seeking donations. Find out more about ExperienceCorps online at www.experiencecorps.org. And let me know if you have served with ExperienceCorps.
