Baby Boomers Concepts - Age
One of the things I’ve always enjoyed about working in the information technology industry over the past 32 years was the newness of it. Most everything is always new and not just a different body type, but really, really new. With that environment came the youth of the people around me. At my last job I was the oldest person in the IT Department.
When you are around people younger than you, you tend to think of yourself in those terms. You see yourself as a member of that group and cast yourself in that mold regardless of what the mirror says. Being out of that environment now I see more people my own age, 62 on the 23rd. It’s a little startling.
The other day I saw a tall guy with gray hair who wore shorts and a faded “Hard Rock Cafe” T-shirt. Yesterday, a guy in the neighborhood another guy, obviously in his 60’s, was listening to the Rolling Stones while he cleaned out his garage. It was startling.
Usually I thought of my parents and their generation when I saw gray haired people doing chores on a weekday afternoon. Guess I’m 20 years out of date when it comes to my self-concept, probably, no definitely more. When it comes down to adjustments about retirement that’s going to be my biggest one. All things considered, that makes me very lucky.
