Age Discrimination – Part 2

April 21, 2008 by Jean Murray

Jim is right in his post yesterday.  Many of us Baby Boomers have experienced age discrimination.  Age discrimination is a harsh reality for those of us who are over 40.  So what do we do about it?

The problem is that’s subtle.  You will never hear someone say, “We can’/won’t hire you because you’re too old.”  I applied for a teaching job a few years ago.  I found the resume of the other applicant (it was online), who ultimately got the job.   It was clear that I had him on every credential.  So, what should I have done?  Should I have sued the college for age discrimination? Should I have gone to bat for my rights, on principle? (A quote I heard some time ago:  “People who say ‘it’s the principle of the thing,’ really mean, ‘it’s the money.’ “)

Was I right?  Should we fight these subtle, but very real, discriminations?
