A Small Business Team – Information Technology
Today’s business environment demands that your business management team be technology smart. There are different levels of smart.
My son runs a business on the side supporting small businesses such as a home travel agency, tattoo parlors, churches, and others. He provides web site design, web site hosting, low cost tech advice, trouble shooting, hardware repair and other miscellaneous techie stuff like that. Here’s the plug for my kid. www.samserv.net
Every small business needs a resource like my kid to implement and support the technology your company needs in today’s business environment. The other option is that you do the Computer and Internet magic because you’re into that sort of thing. The down side is that getting up to speed and keeping up takes your time away from your real business. The other side of that argument is that if you are in the technology business, you should be doing your own work.
The one thing your really need to understand is how money changes hands over the Internet. Understand PayPal. Understand how your competitors handle money, because it is part of the sales experience.
While this “hired hand” does the nuts and bolts you need to be surfing the net to understand what your market is doing. I don’t care what niche business you are in someone else is in the same business and they are working on the Internet. Maybe they are just working through e-bay, but they are out there. Potential suppliers are on the Internet as well as customers. You need to know what is going on so that you can talk to your geek and tell him or her how to adjust your technology to fit the business.
A boomer part-timing in tech assistance works just as well as a twenty-something. Here is where a boomer can provide added value. The added value comes from the business experience a boomer brings to the table. It’s the consultant role that can save and make you money. Technically what you have seen on the Internet may be more expensive than you can afford. Options may be available. The most important thing is to talk business goals and needs.
If you can get a geek and a consultant in the same body, that’s nice. You may need 2 different resources. A mechanic to handle the “bits and bites” is required. A boomer on your team who has a combination of business and technical backgrounds can give your business an extra edge in today’s business environment.
The Internet is the way of the world.
