Do you take an end-of-month assessment of your small business to determine what you’ve accomplished?  Have you reached the goals you set at the beginning of the month. 
Oh!  Oh!  You didn’t set any goals at the beginning of the month, so you were aiming wildly at a target…or had no target.  You were simply “going with the flow.”
So….how about setting down some targets for October? 

What do you want to accomplish?
Where do you want to be in production and sales?

As a member of the Boomer generation, are you using Facebook and similar social media tools to promote your small business or for your personal enjoyment?  When I first started using Facebook it was for my writing business and to keep in touch with writing colleagues. Then I discovered it a great way to keep in touch with my grandchildren and my younger non-Boomer friends and relatives.

Baby boomers should write down their memories for their children, grandchildren and future generations.  Some of us may have memories of attending one-room schools that will seem so unique to today’s children.  If we don’t write them down, send them to publications, include them in a blog or book, part of history (ours and our culture’s) will be lost.

When I discussed in a post the proposed government control of the Internet, whereby President Obama could declare an emergency and interfere with private Internet use for “security” reasons,  one reader commented:  I think you’re overreacting. This looks like more hysteria creation from the far right. No president of the USA is going take away Internet communication; it’s not the way things are done in the USA.

If you’re experiencing a slowdown with your business during this sluggish economy, consider how you might be able to enter the “green” movement momentum.  If you can slant your business to encompass some phase of environmental concerns, you may be able to attract more customers.

Perhaps you already have a product that falls into the “green” category, but you simply haven’t been focusing on promoting this aspect.  So, rethink your promotion techniques.
What about providing a service that helps others conserve, reuse or recycle?  Perhaps this would incorporate some of your present products.

Almost everyone, when they begin a small business, want instant success.  This would be the ideal situation…having your business take off profitably from the start with no challenges nor setbacks.  However, the ideal doesn’t usually work out in life, although there are some exceptions.
For some people, success comes sooner because:

They’ve given more thought to planning their business before starting
They have more investment capital of their own
They have business knowledge
They have a product or service that appeals in today’s market (often because of their previous research)
They are willing to put in hours and hours of work themselves

As boomers discover it more difficult to find jobs, how can they determine whether they should try starting a small business?  How can they beat the odds in an economic downturn?
Find a need and fill it as the mom did who makes reusable lunch bags to eliminate the need for so many disposable sandwich bags.
Is pet sitting a possibility?  I heard someone else mentioning that it was hard to go on a trip because it was so expensive to leave their pets at a kennel.

As more and more people struggle with the downturn in the economy, many businesses have been affected negatively.  Some may be in the right place at the right time to help and encourage others and provide necessary services.
However, often if people need your services, they have less money to pay for them, so you don’t get paid so readily.  Trying to collect what’s owed you can be a challenge.
