Exit Plans for a Small Business…Whether Successful or Failing

Exit Plans for a Small Business…Whether Successful or Failing

In response to Jean Murray’s former post on this blog, Do You Have an Exit Plan?, a reader gave some suggestions.
Not having an exit plan is like jumping from an airplane without a parachute (usually not a good outcome). There are specific things that owners can do to maximize the value of their business and reduce risks, and taxes when they exit. But it requires planning ahead. Owners who have an exit plan will always have a better landing than those who do not plan.
It is a fact that every owner will transition out of their business in one …read more

Boomers To Receive Decreased Social Security Checks

Boomers To Receive Decreased Social Security Checks

According to recent reports, boomers and others eligible for Social Security, could receive decreased Social Security checks in 2010.  At least they won’t be increased.  If you have prescription insurance taken out, that amount is scheduled to increased, so your net will be less.  It’s likely, too, that Medicare premiums will go up…they have every year.
If you plan on Social Security to help with your living expenses, you may have to reorganize your budget and priorities.
How will this affect your small business?

You may need to draw more for your personal living from your business.
If your customers/clients draw Social Security, they …read more

Boomers & Older Make Their Voices Heard

Boomers & Older Make Their Voices Heard

Over the past few weeks, boomers and older, have shown they won’t simply sit back and be run over.  They’re making their voices heard on issues that concern them, their children and grandchildren…like government health care, cap and trade, loss of jobs, the economy and their small businesses.
Too often, the “senior” generation are considered “out of it,” too old to count, unable to make valid decisions so are ignored.  However, they’re getting out there at town meetings, they’re marching, they’re writing letters and e-mails. even establishing blogs.  They’re showing they are present in our country and society and can still …read more

Boomers Caring for Parents

Boomers Caring for Parents

In addition to being grandparents caring for grandchildren, boomers might be caring for parents, too.  Sometimes they’re the sandwiched generation, caught between generations…parents, children and grandchildren.
At one time I cared for aging parents, a mom and aunt (her sister) with Alzheimer’s, and an uncle who couldn’t get out and about too well.  They also lived at a distance.  Eventually, as most passed away, we moved my mom to our house and eventually to a nursing home.
Before Mother died, our daughter, her husband and two children shared a household with Jim and me.  So we were a mixture of generations caring …read more

Boomers, Take Notice – Your Grandparenting May Become Regulated

Boomers, Take Notice – Your Grandparenting May Become Regulated

Upon close scrutiny, you’ll find within the Obamacare proposals government parenting and grandparenting.  Home visits by government/state agents are indicated, whereby representatives will be able to “advise” those involved in children’s care on how to raise them.  This is under the guise of “health care.”
What we all wonder…are these simply suggestions?  Or will those raising children be required to follow the state’s agents’ advice.  Will this advice ignore parents and grandparents’ moral, ethical, and religious view in favor of state approved ones? Often these conclusions about childcare are made by people who don’t have children and have never raised them.

Do Boomers Compete for Their Grandkids?

Do Boomers Compete for Their Grandkids?

Are you one of those grandparents who is competing for your grandkids’ attention and affection?  Do you spend money on spoiling them and trying to do more than their other grandparents?
Yes, you enjoy them, you want to buy them “things,” and want to take them places.  However, are you attempting to outdo the other set of grandparents?  Or perhaps, if you’re divorced, you’re want to do more than than your former spouse.
What will your grandchildren remember you for?  The “things” you bought them or the times you’ve been there for them, the enjoyable moments that possibly didn’t cost any money, the lessons …read more

Boomers’ Concerns About Obamacare

Boomers’ Concerns About Obamacare

In response to Jean Murray’s , Will Obama’s Health Plan Destroy Medicare?”, one of our readers gave this input:
I do not understand what Obama is doing concerning Medicare. We are on a fixed income and Medicare is to our advantage for health care. Monies are taken out every month from our social security to pay for our Medicare part A and part B. I trust we will not be affected. Nothing is clear to the public. Just keep Medicare for those who have it and have been paying into it!!!
Jean had discussed “savings” actually meaning cuts in health care for …read more
